Department of pharmacology was founded in April 1920 and based on the medical faculty of Baku State University (BSU). In 1930 has been created on the basis of medical faculty BGU the independent Azerbaijan State Medical Institute (AMI) and the pharmacology department was included in AMI and has started to function. After receiving the University status, department of pharmacology perform at the Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU). In 1920-1929 the pharmacology department headed by professor P.Y.Rostovtsev. As one of the students of scientist I.P.Pavlov professor P.Y.Rostovtsev has outstanding achievements in the development of the scientific basis of teaching of the azerbaijan pharmacology. As a result, his activities have been prepared valuable teaching aids such as "A Guide to Experimental Pharmacology" and "Guidelines for Research of medical prescription". Were carried out valuable experimental studies of the action mechanisms of drugs, in particular, the researches the reflex action mechanisms of drugs based on the teachings of Pavlov. In 1929 chair of pharmacology was elected A.M.Chernikov, and headed the department until 1940. Continuing the tradition of the academic school of Pavlov, A.M.Chernikov created an experimental laboratory in the department, and carried out valuable research on various aspects of pharmacology "The reactivity is the problem in pharmacology", "The mechanism of allergic reaction", etc. His research work "Adverse effects on the human body oil and oil products" should be noted as the important for Azerbaijan as an oil country. Professor A.M.Chernikov is one of the initiators of the first study of the pharmacological aspects of our country rich medicinal plants flora. Under his leadership were carried out experimental and pharmacological studies of some medicinal plants growing in Azerbaijan, in particular, alkaloids, glycosides, and other biologically active components. Professor A.M.Chernikov spent a lot of work to increase the process of teaching the subject of pharmacology in the direction of improving the professional development of teachers. Under his leadership were defended 3 doctoral (A.M.Aliyev, G.X.Sarkisov, F.K.Kovsar) and 2 candidate theses (H.B.Allahverdibayov, P.A.Yuzbashinskaya). Under the guidance of professor A.M.Cernikov completed doctoral thesis on "An experimental nephritis and its treatment," and successfully defended it in 1937 the first scientist of Azerbaijan, later known party figure and statesman Aziz Mammadkerim Aliyev. The experimental part was carried out fully at the department of pharmacology (in 1932-1934), the clinical part was held in Moscow. His scientific and practical value of this work was awarded to the All-Union Competition of Young Scientists Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Central Committee of Komsomol, and in 1938 by a decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of the USSR was recognized as the best doctoral dissertation in the field of medicine.
