The history of foreign language teaching at the Azerbaijan Medical University runs back to the date of its foundations in 1930. But only in 1943 it began its activity as an independent Foreign Languages Department and I.I.Sidorchuk was appointed the head of the department.
In 1960-1991 the honorable teacher of Azerbaijan Sh.Kh.Jabrayilbayova and then, in 1992-2001 professor A.H.Garayev headed the Foreign Languages Department. Since 2002 professor Z.Sh.Mammadova leads the Department.
Present day needs and interests in learning foreign languages (especially English) have considerable increased due to integration of Azerbaijan higher education into the European educational area.
Consequently, application of new technologies based on completely new approaches in foreign (English, German, French, Russian) languages training has become of great necessity. Foreign Languages Department is seeking to meet educational requirements by improving the content and methods of teaching languages.

Huseynova), “English for medical students” (Baku, 2015, Associate Prof. G.S. Rahimova), "Russian language" (textbook for students of the Faculty of Dentistry) (Baku, 2015, Senior Lecturer N.H. Hajiyeva, A.J. Alizadeh, N.A.Aliyeva), “Teaching and practical material on the Russian language in teaching the scientific style of speech of medical students” (Baku, 2016, Prof. T.A. Khalilova, Prof. Z.Sh. Mammadova, Senior Lecturer I.I. Kazimova, Senior Lecturer S.A.Samadova), “Tests in English course for Medical students” (Baku, 2016, Lecturer Ch.N.Ismayilova), “English” (textbook for foreign listeners of the Introductory Course of Medical University) (Baku, 2017, Senior Lecturer M.A.Garayzadeh) have been published and are being applied in teaching by the collaborators of the Department.
The teaching staff (consisting of 38 persons) makes great effort to improve the professional level by numerous linguistic and pedagogical investigations, their results being published in scientific periodicals.
Due to the effective organization of the teaching process the students successfully make reports in foreign languages at different conferences on actual medical themes.
Regularly organized and based on apparent needs of the learners ESP (English for Special Purposes) courses for the lecturers of the different medical specialties, as well as for post-graduates and students-foreigners are the best way for those who intend to acquire in Medical English proficiency.
Foreign Languages Department will further do its best to implement the modern Education standards in training of the qualified young specialists - doctors.
