4 May – World Asthma Day

World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. World Asthma Day takes place on the first Tuesday of May. The World Asthma Day was held in 1998 in more than 35 countries and it was dedicated to the World Forum on asthma. Each year the number of participating countries increases.

World Asthma Day is dedicated to raising awareness about this pernicious disease and seeks to bring awareness and advanced asthma care to sufferers throughout the world.

Asthma in translation from Greek is "heavy breathing". The author of this term is Hippocrates, and in his works in the section "On Internal Suffering" there are indications that asthma is spastic and causes suffocation. For centuries, scientists have tried to study this disease and its causes. In the 20th century, it was found that the cause of asthma was an allergic reaction, a local inflammation of the bronchi in response to an external stimulus (chemical, biological, physical).

Today the term "asthma" refers to attacks of suffocation of various origins. But more often asthma means bronchial asthma - a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, which occurs as a result of the action of allergens and leads to symptoms of the disease - difficulty breathing or even suffocation, coughing, wheezing in the chest. Sometimes it is very difficult or even impossible to establish the cause of asthma.

Attention to the problem is not accidental: according to the WHO, asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world - 300 million people suffer from this disease, with each decade increasing their number by a factor of 1.5.

Asthma can occur at any age. But more often it affects young children - in half of patients the disease develops up to 10 years, and in children under 2 years old it is difficult to diagnose asthma - it often hidden under the guise of other diseases.
